Vitturi Castle is a magnificent structure that was built in the 15th century by the Vitturi family from Trogir, Croatia. The castle was built with the intention of providing protection to the Vitturi family and the nearby village of Ostrog. It is an exquisite example of luxurious Renaissance architecture and was completed in 1564. The castle is comprised of a residential building and two defense towers, which were connected to the mainland by a drawbridge. In the 18th century, the drawbridge was replaced with a stone bridge.
One of the most fascinating stories associated with Vitturi Castle is the legend of Miljenko and Dobrila. The tragic story of two lovers from Kaštel Lukšić is often referred to as the Croatian Romeo and Juliet. The legend dates back to the 17th century, when the Vitturi family and the Rušinić family lived in the area. Miljenko and Dobrila fell in love, but their relationship had to remain a secret because of a long-standing feud between their families. When their parents found out about their love, they decided to separate them. Miljenko was sent to Venice, while Dobrila was arranged to marry an older nobleman from Trogir.
Vitturi Castle and the legend of Miljenko and Dobrila are two of the most important cultural landmarks in Kaštel Lukšić, Croatia. Tourists who visit the area can enjoy the beauty of the castle, its park, and the church of St. John. They can also immerse themselves in the rich cultural history of the region and learn about the tragic love story that has captivated the imagination of people for centuries. Kaštel Lukšić is a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to experience the magic and beauty of Croatia.
The Vitturi family designed a classicistic park near the castle in the second half of the 18th century, which was also proclaimed a monument of park architecture in 1968. Today, the renovated castle serves as the cultural center of Kaštel Lukšić, where numerous exhibitions, concerts, and plays are held. The former residential part of the castle houses the town museum and other cultural institutions.
Miljenko found out about his plans and returned from Venice just in time to stop the wedding. As a result, he was banished from Kaštel Lukšić, and Dobrila was sent to a convent. However, she escaped with the intention of reuniting with Miljenko and marrying him secretly. When Dobrila’s father found out that she had escaped, he sent a messenger to find the two lovers and tell them that he would no longer oppose their marriage. The lovers accepted his proposal and returned to Kaštel Lukšić, where they got married. Sadly, Dobrila’s father was consumed with rage and killed Miljenko after the wedding celebration. Several months later, Dobrila died of sadness, and her only wish was to be buried next to Miljenko. Their grave can be found in the church of St. John in Kaštel Lukšić, and it is famous for the inscription “Rest in peace, lovers.”
